Hotel Continental opened in 1900 with 30 hotel rooms and Theatercaféen on the first and second floors. In 1909, Caroline and Christian Boman Hansen took over the operation of the hotel and Theatercaféen, and since then the hotel and Theatercaféen have been owned by the family.

The first portraits appeared on the wall in 1924 and today there is a collection of 87 portraits. Artists and cultural personalities have been drawn and given their place on the walls of Theatercaféen. It´s become an important part of a tradition that has lasted for almost 100 years.
